What do Tim and Eric 'mean' to you?

Postby CosmicHalitosis » Fri Apr 08, 2011 7:46 am

Write some sappy words about how their work has affected your life! :-[

Thought of this because a friend and I had a pretty 'deep' conversation about how Tim and Eric's work makes us feel and how they have helped us...
Probably sounds like crap, but Tim and Eric have really helped me abstain from harmful behavior. I've really loved their work for a long time but, I didn't become completely engrossed in it until I was going through the 'recovery process'.

Their stuff was/is my favorite way to 'numb out'.

Jayzus! I put everything in quotes... :X

But, anyway, when I stopped using drugs Tim and Eric's work became my comfort and escape...

I guess it really isn't 'numbing out' because it's thought provoking. I was no longer hiding from what I detest around me...horrifying normalcy, the 9 to 5 world etc. I learned how to laugh at those things...

Though, T&E comedy is socially relevent, it's presented in a way that's far enough removed from reality to also provide that sense of escape.

Wish I could explain a little better. Think you'll know what I mean...

Thanks Tim and Eric! You helped save my life!

I really liked your post, and I also agree that Tim and Eric, and other great comedians, provide something that people, including myself, have looked for in drugs, and compared to drugs, Tim and Eric's comedy is a lot cheaper, more reliable, and less humiliating to acquire. I know what it feels like to quit using a drug, and feel very anxious that you're going to fall into the depression that led you to take the drug in the first place. Shows as unique and creatively amazing as Tom Goes to the Mayor, Awesome Show, Mr. Show, Monty Python, et cetera are far and few between, and their existence is just the opposite of depressing. It's inspiring that something this good, utterly strange, and human actually made careers for many people, and was able to be appreciated by a large audience. And above all, Tim and Eric have made me laugh many times, and that is itself a drug-like high that is, again, a lot better for you and your life than an actual drug.

Having a Tim and Eric movie to look forward to is also a very happy thing that cheers me up a lot more than say, the next Transformers film, which is the opposite of inspiring -- that's actually depressing, and makes me want to find some drugs. But I'll settle for my Tim and Eric DVDs.

I was sort of embarassed after posting this because it was ridiculously personal, but, it's cool that someone can relate. I'm sure a lot of people can relate.

Strangely, i've seen that Tim and Eric have also helped a lot of people with body image issues. The fact that these guys are conventionally 'imperfect' and simply don't give a fuck is a really cool thing...As you said it's all very 'human'. I've spoken to David Liebe Hart over the phone a few times and he's the real deal. All of 'em are. It's sort of funny to hear people say that the show is 'weird' or 'crazy'. If you think about it, what's genuinely mind-blowing is how much more the majority of television and media distort reality.

It's actually a really interesting story. Basically, I had heard of ASGJ because I'd heard its name mentioned on the interwebs a bunch of times. When I turned 11, my parents game me permission to watch Adult Swim. I was really mature for my age, so they sort of figured it wouldn't hurt. So I began my tradition of staying up uber-late for the sole purpose of watching AS. One night, I fell asleep on the couch while watching it and when I woke up, I saw David Liebe Hart performing Salame! ::hart:: I had to figure out what this was, so I continued to watch and figured out sooner or later that this was Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. The next day, I found the show on On Demand and watched the first episode. Afterwards I was confused. I decided to watch it again. This time around, I would have more time to process what I had just seen. So I watched it again, along with a couple other episodes. I had to watch a ton of them before I could actually decide what I thought of it. By the sixth one, I was pretty sure this was the greatest thing ever. A year later, my friend came over and watched an episode. He also needed a couple watches to confirm what he thought of them. We watched a ton of episodes and clips and he too became an instant fan. We decided that we would also make avant garde comedy short films with our friend Mike. And we do that now.

I became aware of T&E during their second season. Someone had dumped all the 2nd season shows on Youtube, and I stumbled across one that began with T&E fumbling around with their microphones with that cheerful, but horribly stock-looking set. It was funny, but in a way that really grabbed me.

While watching dolls and especially Dad's off, it felt like (as TIm and Eric describe first watching Mr. Show) they were digging around inside my brain. For example in Dad's off, that feeling of being spoiled as a child, having an incredibly lame, weak, but kind Dad who will do whatever he thinks is, "right", for his children. Being generally unhealthy as a child, and having depressing vacations. Quite a few shows felt personal in that way. (Not to sound stalkerish, as, uh, the show wasn't made for me, I'm sure a large percentage of the population can relate to the more personal stuff as well.)

Then, having it all presented in a lighthearted and to the point way. I totally digged the first 3 seasons.
